Clara Vale

Clara Vale, a tiny village, on the banks of the River Avonmore in County Wicklow is a lovely place for a picnic.

It is also easily accessible down a short road off the Woodenbridge.

Clara Vale is particularly lovely in Spring when a huge cherry blossom spreads its branches around the church. Just behind the village is a woodland walk that is peaceful and quiet. The walk is especially good in the autumn when the leaves are changing color.

Clara ValeThe walk follows a path through woodland that has been standing there since the Ice Age and also through a fine stand of mature Oaks.

A steep path from the church rises to a Marian Shrine which has been recently restored and which provides a private eyrie to look over the river valley.

Thomas Moore’s Ballad The Meeting of the Waters was written in 1807 about the valley in which Clara Vale Church is found. “There is not in this wide world a valley so sweet” Moore wrote.

If you are bringing children a visit to Clara Laragh Adventure Park just a few miles further up the road Clara Vale is an ideal stopping off point for a picnic.

On the way back to your cottage Avoca Hand Weavers has a very browsable shop in Avoca Village, the village known as the setting for the TV series Ballykissangel.
