Wexford has many festivals throughout the year. Most weekends in June July and August bring celebrations or commemorations based on famous events and people or on art or other special interests. Several are associated directly with music and even those with other themes usually have music as part of the celebrations.

The most famous festival is the Wexford Opera Festival but other festivals bring their own excitement and charm to the county.

Enniscorthy Blues Festival

This well estalished festival on the banks of the river Slaney includes international and local performers, in a variety of late night concerts and open workshops.

All the events are free except for the headline concert and offer an excellent choice and variety of Blues, Jazz, Delta Blues, Bluegrass, Chicago Blues and just about everything else in between. The festival takes over the entire town at the beginning of September and is great fun.

New Ross Piano Festival

New Ross Piano Festival which takes place in September brings pianists of national and international reputation to the town. Many of the concerts are in St.Marys Church built on the nave of Saint Mary’s Abbey which was one of the oldest churches in Ireland. Fun events about the town focused on the piano include “Play Me Pianos” in unexpected places about the town, jazz sessions and piano master classes with talented students which are open to the public.

The AIMS Choral Festival

The AIMS Choral Festival is also hosted by New Ross town. A choral Competition which attracts over 1,000 choristers to the town in May each year.

Traditional Music Weekend

The Phil Murphy Weekend in Carrig on Bannow celebrates the life of a very well traditional musician and mummer from that village.

The weekend which features concerts, sesuns and workshops attracts traditional musicians from around Ireland and from abroad. It takes place towards the end of July. The Wexford Folk Orchestra, an orchestra of 25 traditional musicians, may be seen playing during the weekend.

Art Craft and Design Festivals
